New York Croatia’s return to the top flight last Sunday after a ten-year absence turned out to be a memorable one. The former Cosmopolitan Soccer League champs blanked Manhattan Kickers 4-0 at Grand Street despite playing the last hour with ten men.

Two-goal Veto, Erik Kotyinski, whose blistering free kick tore through the Kicker wall, and Filip Loncar got Croatia off to a flying start on the opening day of the 2009-2010 CSL season.

“If not for the heroics of Bernie Sheary in goals we would have lost more than 4-0,” conceded Kickers manager Mike Fitzgerald.

League champions in 1998 before the club dropped out of the CSL, Croatia clinched the Second Division title last season.

Kicker goal merchant Gilad Bloom snatched a late winner off a John Slover assist, to ruin the Croatia reserves’ Division One return. This, after Alfredo Tomassino [70th] had pegged back Jesse Conan’s opener for Kickers [36th].

CELTIC HERO

New signing Anatoliy Taranenko was the Celtic hero at John Dewey High School where Manhattan Celtic, the other promotion side, stunned Brooklyn Italians 3-1 on their First Division debut.

Taranenko connected in the 26th, 70th and 88th minutes on his first appearance for Celtic, who finished second to Croatia in Division Two.

And like was the case with the Croatia reserves, Celtic’s second unit also came a cropper in their opener, succumbing 4-1 to Brooklyn.

Chris Vega set up Adam Darter [80th] for Celtic’s face-saver.
