CELTIC DOUBLE Stuart Evans [30th] and David Linn [40th] connected ten minutes apart as Manhattan Celtic downed New York Ukrainians 2-1 at Pier 40 to revive their Second Division title hopes. Adam Maliniak replied for Ukrainians. The win vaulted Celtic [8-4-1, 25] past New York Fury and back into second place, two points adrift of leaders New York Croatia. The Croats and Fury battled to a goalless draw at Icahn Stadium. John Tanios struck [65th] in the Celtic reserves 1-0 victory. “A good performance from both teams,” said Celtic coach Ian Woodcock. At Icahn, Alfredo Tommasino and Winston Shippie scored for Croatia’s reserves in a 3-2 loss. HERCULEAN EFFORT Undermanned Clarkstown came up a goal short in a 3-2 defeat by Kandia at Rockland Country Day School. After winning the opener 3-2, ten of the same Clarkstown reserve players trotted back on the field for the senior fixture. Within ten minutes Peter Drames had pounced on young Kandia goalie Mario Hammond’s howler to slot into an empty net. Twenty-one-year-old Gavin Monteith, all 5-6 of him, then leveled for Kandia when he nodded in a corner [25th], but Colin Hodge [57th pen.] restored the home team’s lead despite Clarkstown starting the second half with ten men. At any rate, weary Clarkstown were soon running on fumes allowing Kandia to take all three points with two spectacular strikes. First Shirville Jarvis equalized with a 40-yard lob then Dave Taylor volleyed home the winner from an acute angle [74th]. “Hats off to the guys that showed up; two games in 80-90 degree weather is not easy,” said Clarkstown coach Justin Koblish after the Second Division tussle. Substitute Matt Goldberg [47th] struck with his first touch at Evander Childs High School where EMC beat Ridgewood Romac 1-0. The reserves tied 3-all.
